ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Safe Schools NC will host its inaugural LGBTQ Education Conference for Teachers and Support Staff on November 21, 2015. The purpose of the conference is to grow school faculty and district leaders the knowledge and skills to create safe learning environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and employees and the children of same-gender parents.
The conference will cover topics such as LGBTQ 101, how to support transgender and gender nonconforming students, how to start a GSA, bullying intervention, and age-appropriate LGBTQ-themed classroom resources. A draft list of sessions can be found here. Session descriptions will be added mid-October.
All school employees and educators are welcome and encouraged to attend, including teachers, teacher assistants, administrators and other school leaders, guidance counselors, social workers, psychologists, district leaders, school board members, and more! CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The conference agenda includes a keynote address from Omar Currie, former Efland-Cheek Elementary School teacher; a panel discussion featuring LGBTQ high school students, and three 90-minute self-selected sessions. You can see a draft agenda here.

REGISTRATION
The conference registration link is now active. The conference fee is $35. Undergraduate and graduate students receive a $5 discount. The conference fee includes a boxed lunch. Conference participants earn 0.8 renewal credits.
DIRECTIONS
Directions to Smith Middle School 9201 Seawell School Rd., Chapel Hill, NC
- Take Interstate 40 to Exit 266 (NC HWY 86 South / Martin Luther King Blvd). From eastbound 40, exit right and turn right. From westbound 40, exit right and turn left.
- Travel 1.5 miles to the intersection with Homestead Road. Turn right onto Homestead.
- Travel 1.0 miles to Seawell School Road. Turn left onto Seawell School Road.
- Travel 0.5 miles to Smith Middle School. Turn right into the driveway with the CCEE and Smith Middle School sign.
