Safe Schools NC is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to creating a safe and positive learning environment for all students and educators in North Carolina, with an emphasis on actual or perceived sexual orientation.

Safe Schools NC hosted its inaugural LGBTQ Education Conference for Teachers and Support Staff on November 21, 2015. The purpose of the conference was to offer school faculty and district leaders the knowledge and skills needed to create safe learning environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students/employees and for the children of same-gender parents.

The conference was a great success. One hundred and thirty-seven teachers, school leaders, school board members, counselors, psychologists and pre-service educators attended the daylong conference. Due to generous donations from individual and local businesses we were able to provide donations to over 15 attendees! Forsyth, Brunswick, Orange, Durham, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and Buncombe were some of the counties represented this day. In addition, we had a wide-array of presenters whose expertise with LGBTQ issues and gender non-conformity was shared during the sessions. Presenters came from as far away as New York.

High school can be a challenging experience for any student, but this is especially true for our transgender and gender-nonconforming students. Although many children are beginning to define and understand gender in fluid terms, these trends do not suggest that all transgender students feel supported by their teachers, administrators, and peers during high school.
